50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF SÀI GÒN GIẢI PHÓNG NEWSPAPER HELD AT REUNIFICATION HALL
On the morning of May 4, 2025, Sài Gòn Giải Phóng (SGGP) Newspaper held a solemn ceremony at Reunification Hall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its first issue (May 5, 1975 – May 5, 2025). The event marked half a century of accompanying readers and amplifying the voice of the Party and people of the city named after Uncle Ho.
The history of SGGP is closely tied to the nation’s most pivotal moments. On April 30, 1975, Sài Gòn and the South were fully liberated. Just five days later, under the direction of the Sài Gòn – Gia Định Regional Party Committee (now the HCMC Party Committee), the first issue of SGGP was published. It was a large-format daily newspaper that promptly met the urgent need for information during the early days of liberation. More than just a publication, SGGP has been a faithful witness and storyteller of a transformative era.
Over the past five decades, SGGP has continuously evolved, maintaining its political identity while enhancing content quality and adapting to modern media trends. For its enduring contributions, the newspaper has been awarded:
-
Third-class Independence Medal
-
First, Second, and Third-class Labor Medals
-
Numerous commendations from the HCMC Party Committee, People’s Committee, and central agencies
At the event, SGGP was honored to receive congratulatory floral tributes from:
-
General Secretary Tô Lâm
-
Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính
The ceremony was graced by the presence of:
-
Nguyễn Minh Triết – former Politburo member, former President of Vietnam
-
Trương Tấn Sang – former Politburo member, former President of Vietnam
-
Mai Văn Chính – Central Committee member, Deputy Prime Minister
Alongside other former and current leaders of Ho Chi Minh City, representatives of various departments and organizations, contributors, artists, and loyal readers.
The ceremony featured heartfelt reflections, emphasizing SGGP’s role in guiding public discourse—especially amid today’s dynamic digital media landscape.
